FAQs

How do I get started?

Email me at jeff@jeffreymotter.com or call 646-360-0670. For more information, please see the Get Started page.

What types of individuals do you work with?

Adults ages 18 and up living in New York state who are ready to make changes in their lives in pursuit of improved mental wellbeing.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

No, I currently only offer remote video-enabled telehealth sessions. The video platform is available through a secure system called SimplePractice that’s easy to use on a laptop, desktop, or smartphone, and doesn’t require you to download anything. Detailed instructions for accessing and using the telehealth platform are provided during the initial phone consultation and appointment scheduling.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require a minimum of 24 hours advanced notice for cancellations or rescheduling your appointment. Your session is held exclusively for you and cannot be filled by other patients at the last minute. You are responsible for paying the full appointment fee with less than 24 hours advanced notice of cancellation or in the event of a no-show.

How do we know therapy works? What does the science say?

The effectiveness of therapy for treating depression and anxiety has been measured in dozens of clinical trials conducted by numerous groups of investigators across a diverse range of patient populations. The consensus in the scientific community is that there is strong research support for the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (and other therapy modalities) for reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. More information on the evidence for the effectiveness of psychological treatments (including other conditions besides depression and anxiety) can be found on this page maintained by the Society of Clinical Psychology.

How will I know if therapy is working for me?

We will establish clear treatment goals and actively monitor your progress towards those goals. We will also routinely assess improvement with scales that have evidence of reliability and validity for measuring symptom severity.

How long does therapy last?

I view therapy as a brief intervention that is not designed to stretch on indefinitely. The length of standard therapy varies, but is typically 12-16 45-minute weekly sessions. During treatment planning and during the course of therapy, we will discuss whether to adjust the duration to match your personalized needs.
